Penn DOT Approves North America Traffic's Portable Traffic Signal

Signal can now be used on Pennsylvania Department of Transportation projects.

Port Colborne, ON

Pennsylvania contractors can now use North America Traffic portal traffic signals on Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) projects. PennDOT issued the approval on November 20, 2009 following successful evaluation on two separate construction projects by Clarion, PA-based, Francis J. Palo Construction.

“One of the test project sites was a road with two bridges where we used them for day and night traffic control for three months straight,” says Mark Schaffer, vice president at Francis J. Palo Construction. “They were easy to program and we have plans to use them again this summer.”

North America Traffic manufactures and distributes eight different models of portable traffic signals. The portable traffic signals, which came on the market in 2000, require much less set up time than traditional temporary traffic signals; taking one hour or less versus one to three weeks. They run on battery power charged by solar panels and provide automated traffic control.

The PTL 2.4x is North America Traffic’s latest model. It features a nine-foot trailer, down from 18 feet which reduces shipping costs by 50%; optional increased battery capacity; a power signal head extension and removable tongue for anti theft.

The previous model held eight batteries which can last 17 days without sun. The new model can hold up to 16 batteries and doubles the battery run time to 34 days without sun.

The higher signal head can extend out an additional four feet over the traveled lane and both signal heads are hinged so they can be easily turned 180 degrees to face the opposite direction.

Portable traffic signals are used on road and bridge work and are especially useful on projects requiring overnight traffic control.

About North America Traffic

North America Traffic was launched as R.C. Flagman in 1993 when Peter Vieveen built the world’s first Remote Controlled Flagman™ out of his garage. At the time, Mr. Vieveen was a senior estimator in the construction industry with over 25 years of construction experience. He understood the importance of reducing costs while increasing safety. North America Traffic now operates a full production facility, and its products have been used on over 3,000 projects across North America. Today, it is the world leader in traffic control systems, with 8 different models of portable traffic signals and flagging systems to meet all traffic control needs.
