North America Traffic: Celebrating 30 Years of Excellence and Innovation

In 2024, North America Traffic (NAT) stands at a pivotal juncture, celebrating a distinguished three-decade legacy marked by unwavering excellence and pioneering innovation. We invite you to join us in acknowledging this significant milestone as we delve into the intricate tapestry of our history. Throughout the years, innovation has been the cornerstone propelling NAT to its esteemed position as an industry leader.

The History of North America Traffic

The inception of North America Traffic traces back to Peter Vieveen, an adept cost estimator who initially managed the company as a garage-run venture. Drawing from his firsthand experience as a flagger during his formative years, Vieveen keenly observed the hazards and economic implications associated with human flaggers on construction sites.

Fueled by a visionary spirit, he conceptualized a ground-breaking solution, leading to the creation of the first automated flagging system in 1987. This pioneering invention went on to redefine the roadwork industry.

In 1994, operating under the moniker RC (Remote Control) Flagman, Vieveen presented the world’s inaugural AFAD to the Ontario Ministry of Transportation, marking a seminal entry into the industry. However, this triumph did not stifle innovation; the AFAD underwent a series of transformative iterations to continually elevate standards of safety and efficiency in construction traffic control.

Ultimately, this revolutionary device garnered approvals in both Canada and the United States, obtaining recognition from the Department of Transportation (DOT) and compliance with the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices (MUTCD).

Portable Traffic Signals: Redefining Project Management

At North America Traffic, our commitment to revolutionizing project management is exemplified through our sophisticated portable traffic solutions designed for both short and long-duration projects. In the realm of extended projects, often spanning 3 to 6 months, such as bridge construction, our traffic control solutions operate 24/7, ensuring continuous and efficient traffic control. Conversely, for shorter-term assignments replacing human flaggers, we offer three specialized products tailored to this industry.

Our prowess in portable traffic solutions has been driven by advancements in solar, LED, battery and PLC technologies. These innovations have empowered us to craft an exceptional line of Portable Traffic Signals and other trailer-mounted, automated signalling devices.

Safety stands as a cornerstone in our pursuit of innovation. We firmly believe that disruptive technologies, when judiciously employed, have the potential to enhance the well-being of workers and introduce novel efficiencies to businesses.

Our journey commenced with pioneering products like the remote-control Flagman, evolving to cater to esteemed entities such as the U.S. Military Department of Homeland Security, the New York State Thruway Authority and the California Department of Transportation. The fruits of this innovation continue to manifest in a diverse range of products that we proudly manufacture.

Our trajectory in the industry began with direct rentals and sales to contractors in Ontario. Since the year 2000, we have strategically expanded our market presence to the United States, serving states such as New York, Ohio, and Michigan. This strategic expansion has solidified our standing as a trusted partner in the U.S. market, showcasing our commitment to providing cutting-edge traffic solutions.
